Did you know that Alzheimer's Australia is now Dementia Australia? In this post, Dementia Australia discusses the name change and the benefits of unification.
Dementia Australia is the unified, national peak body for people, of all ages, living with all forms of dementia, their families and carers. It is the new voice of Alzheimer's Australia and draws on a long heritage of grassroots communities of passionate carers around Australia.
Dementia Australia has evolved into the leading organisation providing a voice for people impacted by dementia. And while Alzheimer’s disease as the most common form, there are more than 100 types of dementia. For this reason, the organisation acted on the advice of many stakeholders (including people living with dementia, families and carers) and took the name Dementia Australia. In this way, the organisation’s message is inclusive of all.
We have a challenge ahead of us in Australia. Dementia Australia knows that awareness and understanding about dementia is still alarmingly low. The prevalence of dementia is growing. It is the second leading cause of death of Australians and the leading cause of death of women in Australia. And the organisation knows too that many Australians do not know Dementia Australia is here for them.
The individuals Dementia Australia is here to serve remain paramount. The organisation is keeping local teams in place and building on invaluable community relationships. The benefits of unification will enable the delivery of consistent support services, strengthen the capacity for advocacy and enhance the organisation’s ability to raise awareness, fundraise, and facilitate research and education into the prevention, delay and cure of dementia.
Behind every decision Dementia Australia makes, every change we make and every person who we work with or support, every process we develop or project or program we introduce – the organisation’s purpose will remain solidly to be here to empower and enable people of all ages living with all forms of dementia, their families and carers.
At our hearts the organisation is the same organisation that you know, as Dementia Australia we are bigger, stronger and bolder.
